Aromatherapy - a look into the past 1

The evolution of aromatherapy

Aromatherapy, although generally recognized as a massage practice somewhere in the 1920s, has a long history behind it. The simple fact that essential oils have been extracted and used for more than a thousand years should make you realise that aromatherapy, as a treatment, must have been engaged in for more than just 80 years. However, it is rather difficult to set an exact time of discovery, the only important note being the many, many years in which practicians have carried out and improved the approach, discovering new things and developing the practice more and more. History speaks of the time of Egyptians and their preoccupation for medicine. What most people do not know is that it is around the time of pyramids and pharaohs that essential oils were first discovered. In fact, it is said that the Egyptians invented the tools to extract the oils, using them of course for medical and beauty purposes. Later on, the famous Hippocrates confirmed the use of essential oils for medical purposes. Coming back to modern times, René-Maurice Gatttefossé is one of the most popular names practicing this type of therapy. It seems that this chemist is in fact the forefather of aromatherapy, a practice that seems to have been discovered by sheer luck like all other great discoveries. While working, he burnt himself, so he used Lavender oil by mistake to calm the pain. To his surprise, it actually worked, this being the birth of a domain that would mesmerize the world through its many benefits. This all happened between the 1920s and 1930s.

Swedish massage – a similar treatment

If aromatherapy has leaped through time, only to be officially established as a practice at the beginning of the century, the Swedish massage is an entirely different story, a simpler one for that matter. This is one practice developed in the 18th century. The man responsible for this type of therapy is Johann Georg Mezger, a practitioner who used his knowledge to create a set of movements aiming to improve blood circulation among others. Getting to know the history of these techniques is the first step to understanding their effectiveness. Learning the many benefits involved is of course the second one, allowing you to have a more comprehensive perspective over these therapies and what it is that they can do for you.
